TGITCP – Nuts for Toasted Coconut Porter

February 13th, 2010

FINALLY had the opportunity to head down to Mellow Mushroom in Winter Park for a beautiful Kosmic Karma pizza, but more importantly to try the new Toasted Coconut Porter, which they and several other Central Florida beer vendors now have on draught.

Tom’s been telling us about this beer for a long time, and it’s release was delayed for a little while, but it was much worth the wait.

It’s a dark but very drinkable beer (arguably what Tom does best) with absolutely no hint of bitterness. I’m not usually a porter fan, but it sits on the brown side of porter. Do not be misled if you care not for coconut (especially if you just hate the consistency). Although I love pretty much any type of coconut flavor, I was surprised to taste mere subtleties of it in TCP, which I think is a very good thing (an overbearing flavor to me may have landed it in the Winter Cask Ale catagory, a kraft beer* whose vanilla flavor punishes the taster). I would recommend this beer to anyone, dark beer fan or not.

After two pints of becoming acquainted, I believe TCP now dominates the dark side of my palate as well. It will most likely be my first choice next time we cross paths. Looking forward to tasting the bottled version as well. Welcome to the family, TCP.
